What is Meniere's Disease

By Deb Bloom of Gimme One of Each

What is Meniere's Disease?

There are semicircular canals in your ears that help maintain balance. When there is an increase in fluid in these canals, balance can be effected and it can also cause hearing loss. When this occurs, it is diagnosed as Meniere's Disease.

People usually between the age of 30 and 60 are effected by this disturbing and annoying disease. It can occur in both males and females and usually only occurs in one ear.

What are the Signs and Symptoms?

These symptoms occur with every acute attack of Meniere's Disease

...severe dizziness.
...noises in the effected ear, such as ringing or buzzing.
...hearing loss that increases after each attack.

These symptoms may or may not occur with every attack

...vomiting.
...sweating.
...jerky eye movements.
...loss of balance.

The cause of Meniere's Disease is unknown but they feel that it could be from spasms of blood vessels to the inner ear. Another possible cause is fluid retention in the inner ear. Allergies have also been linked to this disease.

Treatment

One medical treatment for Meniere's Disease is to decrease the amount of fluid in the inner ear. Using a low salt diet and taking a diuretic accomplish this. The use of diuretics reduce total body sodium and it may take some time to see their effects.

Surgical treatment is considered only if medical treatment has failed and the patient is suffering from incapacitating symptoms. Every effort should be made to try conservative treatment before reaching a surgical decision.

One option for Meniere's Disease is physical therapy. This can be quite helpful. Although exercise cannot cure Meniere's Disease, this treatment gives patients the ability to manage their symptoms better, decrease dizziness, increase balance function and increase general activity and strength.

How Long Will Meniere's Last?

Some patients have very few attacks and seem to heal quickly, while others have more attacks that are more severe each time and may last for many years. Most of the individuals with this disease will have long periods when they are symptom free or have minimal attacks. The disease can continue for an unpredictable period of time but will finally "burnout."

What Can I Do Until It Goes Away?

...Do not walk without assistance or supervision.
...Avoid sudden changes in position.
...Do not drive, climb ladders or work around dangerous equipment.
...Avoid glaring lights and do not read during attacks.
There are medications you can tell. Ask your doctort if that would be a possibility.

I've been to the doctor concerning a constant ringing in my ears. He told me that I had damaged my inner ear, through the use of loud equipment, and that there wasn't any cure.
Great information once again. Thanks.
