Start a Janitorial Service
By Deb Bloom
In these hard economic times, finding work is tough to say the least. So, if you're out of work, you need to find something that will bring in a decent income and isn't going to cost you a fortune to start. How about a Janitorial Service? Most offices or businesses need someone to clean for them, especially if they have customers or business clients that come in and out all day and your place of business needs to make an impression. Consider opening a Janitorial Service. It could be worthwhile and you can make good money, if you take it seriously and do a good job. The only overhead would be your cleaning supplies and a reliable vehicle to get you to the jobs. Here is a list of the basic equipment you will need: Vacuum Cleaner - A good commercial vacuum is the best all-around machine for routine carpet care. Trash Container on Wheels - In large facilities, you can use a large trash can on wheels. a janitors cart or a folding waste cart to make your job a little easier. Cleaning Cloths - Small cotton terry towels for spot cleaning in office areas, wiping and polishing fixtures, chrome and mirrors. Floor Cleaner - Detergent for damp mopping floors. Dust Mop - Use to remove loose soil and debris from hard surface floors. Murphy's Oil Soap - Used on wood furniture, it's about the safest product to use. Spray Bottle of Disinfectant Detergent - A good quality, all purpose disinfectant. Glass Cleaner - Use for spot cleaning doors, office partitions, mirrors. Tub-n-Tile Cleaner - Use in restrooms or kitchens. Furniture Polish - Protects and enhances the appearance of natural wood. Lamb's Wool Dust Wand - Use for dusting high or low spaces. Carpet Spot Cleaner - Use as necessary to keep carpet looking good. Trash Can Liners - Keep baskets clean and sanitary. Feather Dusters - Use to dust delicate items. Paper Towels - Use as needed. Small Squeegees - Use to clean windows, it does a better job than a towel. A janitorial business lacks glamour, but it has proven to be a lucrative business for those who start the business with strong attitude and willingness to work hard.Office cleaning is more of a skill than most think. You need a method, a routine, and you need to prioritize your tasks and clean in a flowing rhythym. Your "normal business hours" will begin when the staff and workers in the commercial facility that you will be cleaning have finished their work and gone home. You have the benefit of setting your own hours but be prepared to work evenings and weekends. You can place ads in local or national newspapers. Go door to door and inquire whether they have a cleaning service. Hand out a business card to everyone and anyone that may need your services. Place your flyers in doctor's offices, laundromats, malls. You can do it! If you plan to start small, I recommend the following factors: * Start small and keep things simple. Start with just a few clients. * Know your limits and do the job right. Don't start out doing everything from dusting to cleaning carpets. * Expand your business with more expensive equipment as the need arises. * Try to start out doing it yourself, or have a friend or relative help you but don't start out with 5 or 6 people trying to do the job correctly. Do the jobs right and satisfy your clients needs or you'll lose their business before you even start. Start Your Own Janitorial Business |
