S'mores...The Ultimate Sandwich!
By Deb Bloom
We've all been diligently writing about sandwiches all week. I contributed, so did a ton of other people. But, how could anyone forget the ultimate sandwich? A smore! OK, it isn't made with bread, doesn't have the typical ingredients on it and you usually don't eat it as a meal, but nevertheless, it's a sandwich, right? If there is someone out there that has not indulged in this campfire delicacy, then you truly are a deprived soul. If you have tried them and disagree that they are as American as apple pie and Mom, and go with summer fun as much as corn on the cob and watermelon, then you are un-American. They are nearly perfect, extremely easy to make and one of the perfect summer treats. I do need to thank the Girl Scouts, because that is apparently where this scrumptious treat originated, and I was a Girl Scout, so I must take some credit for passing this along! As Wikipedia so eloquently puts it..."A s'more is a traditional campfire treat popular in the United States and Canada, consisting of a roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker. The name "s'more" means "some more", as in: "give me some more!" S'mores are most popular with campers because there's always a campfire and there are only 3 ingredients to the s'more, so the s'more kit is easy to take along. My memories of camping consisted of anxiously waiting for evening to arrive so we could get a fire started and get cooking! I guess the cooking is as much fun as the eating and it was usually a big event. You put a marshmallow on the end of a long stick (or metallic skewer) and hold just above a campfire until its outer surface starts to brown. Once it's heated, the inside of the marshmallow becomes soft and hot. Then you quickly take the marshmallow off the stick, place it on a graham cracker, lay chocolate over the marshmallow then top it off with another graham cracker. Hershey's chocolate bars are certainly the favorite, but I guess any chocolate bar will work. When the layers are together, the heat from the marshmallow partially melts the chocolate bar. There are also some variations you can try such as adding peanut butter to the layers. It adds flavor and also helps hold it together. Now, for anyone that has not tried it. If you aren't going camping soon, you can try it in the microwave, just watch it closely and don't ruin it! Enjoy!
