Small Town Attractions - Steam Days, Center Hall, PA

By Deb Bloom

In the middle of corn fields, along a 2 lane country highway, you can find one of the most popular events in Central PA. It's in September, so the weather is usually cool and comfortable. The event that I'm talking about is the Nittany Antique Machinery 35th Annual Fall Show. This year it's on Sept. 10, 11, 12 & 13, from dawn to dusk and features the International Harvestor Tractors and Small Engines. It's located at Penns Cave, Centre Hall, PA, 5 Miles East on Rt. 192. The cost is a mere $5.00 per day but you can get a 4 Day Pass for $15.00. Children under 12 are free. There is also free parking. You need to be warned, too. You will be parking in a corn field that edges the event and I suggest you wear sneakers or some really good walking shoes because there's a lot of walking to do! Even getting through the tramped down cornstalks is a challenge. If you don't want to, or can't, walk the distance, you can ride the hay wagon into the fair grounds for free. And they'll bring you back to your car when you're ready to go!

Some of the show activities and events include:

Tractor and Equipment Displays and Parades
Steam Traction Engines In Operation
Antique Tractors In Operation
Prony Brake
Dynamometer
Gasoline (Hit & Miss) Engines In Operation
150 H.P. Corliss Stationary Steam Engine Operating
Threshing Grain
Bailing Straw
Chopping Corn
Sawing Wood Shingles
Sawing Logs Into Lumber
Live Steam Models and Model Train Tables
Horse Drawn Wagons & Equipment In Operation
Blacksmith Shop and Demonstrations
Antique Tractor Pull 1975 & Older For Fun
Children's Pedal Pull

Special Events & Entertainment - Calliope
Apple Cider Pressing
Peanut Roasting
Home Made Ice Cream
Home Made Bean Soup
Pot Pie & Apple Butter By Steam
Over 800 Flea Market & Crafts Vendors

Now that's quite a list. It's a huge lot of fun for the whole family, whether you own a tractor or not!
