Small Town Attractions - Curwensville Lake
By Deb Bloom
Curwensville Lake, located in Curwensville, PA, is in my home town and is a popular spot with visitors from the local area, but also with tourists of all ages. I have spent many summer days here from the time I was young and the Lake, formerly known as Curwensville Dam, has seen many improvements and it's popularity has grown immensely. There are numerous pavilions where you can plan small or large parties and other events. People have family reunions and baby showers here or just small family picnics for the afternoon. There is a fee for large parties--Monday through Thursday it will cost you $40.00 and Holidays and weekends it's $50.00. There is fishing, camping, paddling, boating, volleyball, hiking, and water skiing at the Lake and there's a small beach and swimming area. There is also several playground equipment units set up throughout the park and a golf course within a few miles. There's even a food stand set up during the warmer months and ice fishing in the winter, along with many other winter sports. There are many events happening at the Lake, something for everyone. In June there was a craft show, and another is planned for September 5th and 6th. It's the 5th Annual Craft Show and Farmers Market where vendors from across the state gather to show and hopefully sell their wares. You can still rent spaces by calling the Lake Office at 814-236-2320. The Farmers Market is a new addition this year, so let's see how it goes. There was also a Perch Fishing Tournament in June and in July there was a Catfish Tournament and people fished all night long. We haven't missed the Bikes and Cars at the Lake, which is on September 5th and 6th. There will be classic cars, hot rods, and bikes of all kind for a weekend as enthusiasts fill the Lake grounds with their awesome 2 and 4 wheel gems. There will also be a Craft Show and Farmers Market in the Grove Area. On September 12, the Clearfield County Conservation District will have their Conservation Celebrationn and it's free! There will be Live Amphibians & Reptiles, Butterfly Display, Fly Fish & Fly Tying, Arts & Crafts, Smokey The Bear, Make-It and Take-It Projects, Canoe and Kayak Demos, Turkey Calling and lots of other fun stuff. There will also be Free Mountain Pies for the Kids. October 9th and 10th is October Fest. The campers decorate their tents and campers with Halloween or Fall decorations and there is a Pumpkin Carving Contest, Hayride, Costume Contest and Parade for people AND pets. The fee to get in the gate is $2.00 per car, $5.00 if you bring your boat and a camp site with electric is $23.00, a primitive site is $14.00. Not much, I would say! The Lake is operated by The Army Corps of Engineers and is located on Route 453 South in Curwensville, PA. Several times a week you may be lucky enough to see the Air Force jets fly over, as we've been told in this area because of the location and size of the Curwensville Lake, they use it to practice their maneuvers. So come on and enjoy the lake with us!
