REAL Weight Loss Tips - From a Healthcare Professional

By Deb Bloom of Gimme One of Each

Everyone's trying to lose weight. All my friends are on diets. It's summertime, (probably the best time of the year to eat!) and we're all saying no to the good foods because of our desperate need to lose that overhang around our belts. At this time of year there are picnics and barbecues, class reunions, graduation parties, weddings, pool parties and exotic vacations all over the world. We cook on the grill almost every night clear through October. So why do we diet now?!

It's become an obsession for the young and old. Lose weight to be healthier, physically fit individuals, and look good on the beach, too. But no matter how much you trim those fatty foods off your plate, you have to have lifestyle changes first. Simply providing nutritional information to those who want to lose weight is not enough. People need to know how to incorporate 'dieting' into their lives and change eating habits without treating it like a diet. You have to have fun and lose weight at the same time.

Problem:
Consider for example, the recommendation to eat more fruits and vegetables. It isn't enough to tell yourself to eat more of these foods and it isn't always that easy. There are many considerations in this recommendation. First determine why you haven't ALREADY been eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. Maybe you have never acquired the taste for fruits and vegetables. Or maybe you live alone and are unable to consume fresh fruit before it spoils. Perhaps no one else in your home eats fruits and vegetables. Maybe some dieters are just unaware of the importance of eating these foods.

Solution:
Depending on your reasons for not eating more fruits and vegetables, try buying canned fruit or frozen items, make more trips to the grocery store, eat fruit for your snacks, eat salad with every meal or eat one new fruit or vegetable every week. Include everyone in your household in this task and let the kids pick the vegetable for dinner, telling them that they must pick a different color every night.

Effective Dietary Advice

1. Add a new fruit or vegetable every week. It's easier, and probably more effective, to add items to a diet menu instead of always taking things away.

2. Go for progress and small changes rather than perfection and an unattainable goal. Losing weight slowly, over a period of a year or more, is the weight loss that works best, and trying to look like the model on the cover of Vogue isn't a very realistic goal.

3. Make sure your diet plan is practical, achievable and consistent with your life-style. If you plan on incorporating exotic foods in your diet, make sure you can purchase these foods in your area.

4. 'Colorize' your plate by adding foods that are orange, yellow, green, purple, blue and red, which mostly consists of fruits and vegetables. Color increases antioxidants that can help improve health.

5. Keep a diary. This is a very important tool of dieting. Food diaries not only monitor calorie intake but also mood, the place in which you ate the food and what time of day. This will help promote behavioral changes linked to overeating or unhealthy food choices.

6. Increasing physical activity is a ball and chain that everyone dreads. Everyone uses excuses to get out of it. Try spreading the increased activity over the entire day. Buy a pedometer and measure your steps all day. Every week, increase that by 10%.

There are so many weight loss programs out there and everyone thinks they have the greatest advice. The important thing to remember is you have all the control. If you change ONE thing every day, whether it's to eat an extra piece of fruit or drink an extra glass of water or walk around the block every day at lunch, it's those little things that will change you over time. It isn't just about the diet. It's about good health, behavioral changes and overall well-being.
