Prisoners Denied Medical Care

By Deb Bloom

I just read in my local newspaper that the Westmoreland County Prison in PA is being sued because they allegedly denied a 23 year old inmate proper medical treatment for his heroin withdrawal. The man died while being ridiculed by the guards. He was only in that prison for 9 days.

I don’t care what a prison facility thinks of the inmates that they house. I don’t care if half of them are drug addicts and drunks. I don’t care if the other half are disrespectful and ignorant. It doesn’t matter how the people that work in prisons see the inmates or how they feel about them. The inmates have the right to proper medical treatment and in lieu of the incident I read about I think the prison and medical staff in every jail and prison should pump up the care and when an inmate complains of something medically wrong, they better treat it. The prison administration apparently thinks that there isn’t anyone out here in the real world that cares. They think because they’re locked up that the inmates are forgotten. Well that’s not the case.

When I read about this type of incident, it infuriates me. The prison system has to abide by the law, too. Prisoners have rights. It is negligent, reckless and inhumane to make ANYONE suffer unnecessarily. What about the 8th amendment? (Click on the link below to read the 8th ammendment as it pertains to inmates).

Please read the news story from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The link is below. It's heartbreaking. Anyone out there that thinks this is outrageous needs to become an advocate for these people and write everyone you can think of that can help. I've also included a list of resources.

It's sad that these people are not fired straight away, it seems like someone is holding a hand over them, a bit corrupt one might think.

Great intel.
