Nothing is Better Than Your First Best Friend

By Deb Bloom

Friends are hard to find. Good friends, anyway. I met Shelly in 7th grade. She had moved from Indiana and we were friends almost instantly. We chummed and buddied around most of our teenage years, stayed overnight at each others houses, double dated with boyfriends together and although there were 8 or 9 of us that were all good friends, Shelly and I were closest.

She was my secret keeper, I could tell her anything. You know, the typical High School friends. We did good things together, like band and choir and other school activities. We also did bad things together like smoking and drinking beer. We experimented with things kids aren't supposed to do, but everyone did it and it never went any further. Our boyfriends at the time were also friends, so double dating was an every weekend event and we always had a blast.

When we got married we weren't in each others weddings because we were both getting married about the same time. I always regretted that. Still through our 20's we were close.

I had 2 daughters by the time I was 25 but although Shelly and her husband tried and tried, she was unable to get pregnant. She was never bitter or upset about it though. Then one day she and another friend talked me into starting Nursing School. I owned a small second hand store that wasn't setting the world on fire and Lock Haven University was starting an RN program in the local town so we all signed up. It was tough, and I'm sure I wouldn't have made it through without them. We had study sessions, taking turns at each others houses. We car pooled and had all the same classes together. When Shelly started Nursing School and stopped dwelling on it all the time, she got pregnant. Of course, we were thrilled.

After she had her baby, she worked in PA awhile, then her and her husband moved to Florida. After she was there about 2 years, she became pregnant again. Life was good for both of us, but I missed her because I only saw her usually once a year. When her kids were about 6 and 3, Shelly got Cancer. She died after a 2 year battle and I hadn't seen her because when I talked about coming to Florida to see her, she was too sick, then she would get better and I would plan to go again, then she would plan on coming to PA, and the circle went round and round that way and we were never able to get it right. I'll always regret that, too.

She died about 7 years ago now and I miss her. I remember our High School days and all the fun we had and the closeness we shared. Friends are different when you make them as an adult. It's never the same. So if you have a long time childhood friend, hang on to her and see her whenever you can because she can be gone in the blink of an eye.
