Donating Directly to Those in Need
By Deb Bloom
I am an avid yard saler, flea marketer and general 'junk' finder. I have done this most of my adult life. Now don't get me wrong, I don't just buy random items, I purchase things I think I can use at home. I have 5 kids, so I have carried a lot of clothing home over the years. If they don't like it, or they grow out of it, I donate it and I used to donate to Goodwill. I know Goodwill is a good program, but I also shop at Goodwill and their prices have gone a little overboard. Poor people can't afford to shop there anymore. A pair of Levi's for 7.99 isn't bad when I want them, but someone with 3 or 4 kids can't afford that. My daughter used to work at Goodwill and she said that after clothing is in the store for awhile and not selling, they throw it in the dumpster. The employees aren't allowed to take it or even buy it and they don't even give it away to the needy. Isn't that what Goodwill is supposed to do? So I started donating directly to the needy. We have a Men's shelter in a nearby local town and also a Halfway House for women. I take the clothing I have to these shelters and give them to the residents. It makes me feel good when the residents can actually look you in the eye and you can see the gratitude on their faces. It isn't for glory or a pat on the back. I do it because I know they appreciate it and it makes me feel so good. So if you have a local homeless shelter, halfway house, rehab or other such facility, please donate your items to them. At least you know it's going to individuals that truly need and want it. Charity Guide |
