Considerate Drivers
By Deb Bloom
I suppose this won't mean anything to a lot of people, but it's a real peeve of mine. I live in a rural area. There is one major 4 lane highway that is near here and the rest of the roads are all 2 lane, secondary roads. Because I am a Home Health nurse, I am on the road 8 hours per day going from house to house and town to town. So I am exposed to a lot of driving and to a lot of other drivers. Here are ways to be a considerate driver: Go the Speed Limit No one's asking anyone to speed and get a ticket. But if the speed limit is 55mph, and you're going 40 mph, you need to pull over. If it looks like a funeral procession behind you, chances are you're going too slow. The DMV sets the speed limits and have determined it's safe at the posted speed. Maintain a Consistent Speed People who slow down going around every curve are a hazard. Once again, if the speed is 55 mph, it has been determined that even on curves this is a safe speed, except of course on winter roads. Don't Pull Out in Front of Other Cars If you're sitting in a parking lot or a side road and you want to pull out, wait until all the cars are past. If you do pull out in front of someone, GET GOING! I love it when cars will wait until you're almost there, then they decide to pull out, then to top it off, they go 20mph under the speed limit! You were in such a hurry to pull out, why not go faster now! If You Want to Sight See, Pull Over We have a river that runs through our little berg, and when the water is low, a local farmer lets his cows go down there for a drink. You have no idea how many times I've gotten behind someone who hasn't seen this before and they nearly stop their cars, dropping down to 20-25mph to watch these cows. It's a 55mph zone! Or if there's a car for sale along the road, or something else they want to see, people just slow down to look! Get off the road! When the Light Turns Green, GO! We have a huge amount of construction going on right now in town. There is one light that changes after 3 or 4 cars have gone through. If you don't get going when it turns green, MAYBE 2 cars can go through, so you're stuck sitting through a whole cycle of lights again. Remember You're Not the Only Car on the Road Because of the same construction mentioned above, traffic is high, lanes are closed, flagmen are everywhere and it takes an extended period of time to get through town to my work place. Speed limit signs and other road signs are there for a reason. Another Rule for Pulling Out of a Side Road Have you ever been behind another car that is pulling out of a parking lot or side road and they keep waiting for traffic that's blocks away? They could have pulled out and back in again in the time it takes the car to get to them? If the road is clear, pull out! I have been a Home Health nurse for 14 years. I have seen roads change, construction come and go and the traffic triple over those years. It used to take me about 10 minutes to get to my office, now it takes at least 20 or 25 minutes even without all the delays. My request to everyone is to remember that you aren't the only car on the road. People are already working or on their way to work or may even have a sick child in the car on the way to the doctor or hospital. I often carry blood specimens to the hospital and get behind someone going 40 mph and it infuriates me. I only have 30 minutes to get most of my labs to the hospital. Read the road signs, go the speed limit, have a little patience when pulling out and follow the rules of the road! It's all about being more considerate to other drivers and remember to share the road! Safe Driving Blog Funny Bumper Sticker
