Belly Dancer - Temptress or Ritual Dancer
By Deb Bloom
There isn't much written down about belly dancing. Articles are far and few between and it certainly isn't mentioned in history books. I have to wonder if it's just interpretation on the admirer's part. How do you see belly dancing? What do you think about the dance? Have you ever watched a belly dancer? Well, regardless of what is or isn't documented about it, most people have to agree on a few points. Belly dancing is very old and although it is an ancient form of dance, many aspects have remained the same but today's belly dance is a much different version than it was hundred's of years ago. In earlier days people felt it had a connection to fertility and eroticism and was often featured at weddings in many Middle Eastern countries. The dance itself is erotic and by performing the dance it is thought to get the bride and groom 'in the mood', therefore offering fertility on the couple, and providing entertainment for the guests. Today bellydance is enjoyed by many people, young and old, men and women, and is done simply for the art of it, the ethnicity, the beauty, and the health benefits. But maybe most of all...it's fun! There are many styles of belly dance and dancers incorporate all the different styles into one dance, coming up with their own style. The actual act of the dance generally consists of a wide range of movements, and the most recognized and popular movement is the hips. But dancers also do isolations of the chest, shoulders, head, hands and even the feet. There are snake-like movements of the torso and quick sharp jerks of the hips that goes well with the staccato of a drum. The dancer is also very flirty as she does her hip-swaying hypnosis for her audience. There are many styles of belly dancing and even the costumes that they wear. Tribal Belly Dance is one type of dance that is very ritual-like, as if the dance was designed to send a warrior off to battle or a bride to her groom or a dying person to the Heavens. Where as the Middle Eastern belly dance appears more seductive and flirty as if seduction is the main object of the dancer. No matter what type of belly dancing you try, what costume you decide to wear, what music you dance to or whether you're doing a ritual dance or flirting with the audience, belly dancing is a very healthy and effective way to promote health and well-being, lose weight and improve self-esteem. Quoted from a famous Tribal Belly Dancer once..."When I first saw a belly dance performance, there was women that were really big, like 300 lbs maybe and I figured if she had enough confidence to dance with her belly hanging out and glide all over the stage without any reservation then this is for me." I have never gone to a belly dance class but I have taught myself the basic moves, wrapped a sheer scarf around my hips and danced in my living room. I felt like the best dancer in the world. I have purchased exercise videos with belly dancing as the teacher and LOVE the whole idea. There just isn't any classes in my remote area. But if I had the chance, I would go in a heartbeat. I even did some paintings in the past which I sold on ebay. There is no right and wrong to this dance. Just get out there and do it! Belly Dance Shop |
