A Perfect Class Reunion
By Deb Bloom
I recently had my class reunion, the 30th to be exact. I know a lot of people dread these functions, I used to, too. But 5 years ago, my class decided to throw out the idea of having a fancy dinner at a country club and no one wanted to wear uncomfortable high heels and fancy suits, so we opted to have our reunion at one of the classmates' camps, wearing flip flops, shorts and t shirts. We had the best time ever. In fact, we had so much fun we ended up having it 2 years in a row, celebrating the 25th and 26th instead of waiting 5 years to get together. We had a really good turn out, with almost half of the students showing up. This year about 70 out of 110 students showed up, most of them bringing spouses. Every year we seem add a few more classmates to the list that didn't come the year before. We exchanged emails and addresses and many people stay in touch now between the 5 years. Our class was always close, and although we had the typical cliques, we've all moved past that and everyone from the cheerleaders and jocks to the the nerds and band members mingled and laughed and merged into one big clique. The guests didn't come in fancy cars to show off in and they left their attitudes at home. Instead they came in trucks and on harleys and laughed at all the old hair and clothing styles as they looked through the year book from the Class of 1979. Needless to say, many of the old hairstyles were gone! The reunion lasted 2 nights, with the first night being a golfing excursion at a local gold club and simple picnic at the camp. Many of the guests that came don't eve know how to golf, they just rode along in the golf cart or made a feeble attempt to play the sport. The second night we just had a nice dinner catered by one of the classmates who owns a local restaurant. We had a Chinese auction and a silent auction with all of the items generously donated by one of our classmates, Herb, who works at Arnie Palmer's Country Club in Latrobe, PA. Herb brought autographed photos of Arnie Palmer, dated wine once produced by Arnie Palmer, gift baskets loaded with household items, bath and body products, coolers of drinks and fancy crackers and vintage items from our old 1970's school days like a Golden Tide football helmet, license plate frame and even an old school newspaper, The Tidette. We raised a lot of money for our next reunion and will have it at the same camp, on Redden Hill, in the woods, wearing jeans, sneakers and sweatshirts. Beats the heck out of pantie hose, neckties and dresses that don't fit quite right. There are lots of different ideas for your next class reunion. --Have everyone bring a covered dish. --Have a 'yard sale.' Have everyone bring a few nice things, preferably new, and people can browse the items and buy what they want. --Have games and activities on the first night like volleyball, horseshoes or even a game of softball. --Have a juke box or Karaoke instead of a DJ or band. --The first night of your reunion could be a family night, or have a picnic during the day and bring all the kids. Chances are they're all the same age. --Make sure you have designated drivers or even accommodations for anyone who drinks too much!Have a theme for your party like beach night or 70's fling or have everyone dress in their favorite era.Have old pictures from the yearbook and mount them on poster board and place them around the room. --Take old pictures, prom or graduation program, foot ball schedule...from school, laminate them and use them for placemats. --Decorate like your Senior Prom. --Decorate the tables with things from the year that you graduated. For example...1950's - use saddle shoes and old records. 1970's - use clips of Farrah Fawcett or TV memorabilia like M*A*S*H, Here's Lucy and Archie Bunker items...If you graduated in 1990, use roller blades and Game Boys. You get the idea. --Invite some of your favorite teachers. --Invite kids that didn't finish school. They were still part of the class most of the years, right? Consider having a different class member host a back yard BBQ instead of renting a hall or community building. --Give everyone a copy of the school newspaper. --Have everyone 'sign in' when they arrive. Send each guest home with a list of all the class mates and their email addresses, a survey that they can fill out and send back in the future about ideas they might have and whether they enjoyed themselves this year. If everyone signs a guest books, have them add name, address, email and other pertinent info like MySpace, Twitter, Facebook... contact info. Have a scavenger hunt or poker run. Everyone meet at a designated place, and work your way back to the reunion hall.
